A typical ball valve consists of the following core components:
Valve body: The primary pressure-bearing component, forming the flow path for the media and the cavity where the ball is mounted. Available in one-piece, two-piece, and three-piece configurations.
Ball: The core opening and closing element, typically a hollow sphere with a central circular hole. Its surface is typically hardened with treatments such as chrome plating and spray welding to enhance wear and corrosion resistance.
Valve seat (seal ring): The key component that forms a seal with the ball. The material used determines the valve’s applicable temperature and media.
Soft seals: PTFE, RPTFE, PPL, Nylon, rubber, etc. Offer good sealing properties but limited temperature resistance.
Hard seals: Metal (stainless steel, Stellite) or ceramic. Offer high temperature and wear resistance, but relatively poor sealing properties.
Valve stem: The transmission component that transmits the operating mechanism’s torque to the ball. Typically, a blowout prevention mechanism is designed.
Stuffing box: Located where the valve stem extends from the valve body, it consists of packing, a packing gland, and other components to prevent media leakage from the stem. Operating mechanism: includes handle, gearbox, electric/pneumatic/hydraulic actuator, etc.
Thrust bearing/bottom bearing: Used to secure the ball valve, bears the weight of the ball and valve stem, and media pressure, reducing operating torque.
The following key factors should be considered when selecting a ball valve:
1. Construction Type:
DN ≤ 150, PN ≤ 40: Floating ball valves are preferred for their economical performance.
DN ≥ 200 or high-pressure applications: A fixed ball valve must be selected to ensure operating torque and tightness.
If adjustment is required: A V-shaped ball valve should be selected.
If high-service maintenance requirements are required: A top-entry ball valve should be selected.
2. Seat Material (determines temperature and media compatibility):
Normal temperature, general media (water, gas, oil): PTFE (-20°C to 180°C).
High temperature or wear resistance: Metal seal (PPL up to 300°C, all-metal up to over 550°C).
